In
the recent reading of Beowulf I find it very interesting that Grendel’s mother
acts out in vengeance from Grendel’s death instead of his father. Women were not given the respect or credit
for taking care of physical work at that time however in the story a mother
figure is fighting instead of a father figure.
It shows the story as being well ahead of its time and very much
surprised me. Once again Grendel’s
mother, much like Grendel himself, enter the mead hall when everyone is
sleeping. Unlike playing by societies
rules in the time Grendel and his mother act out much like you would expect
monsters to act. It shows the cowardliness
behind who is supposed to be strong and scary.
Once
Beowulf returns from slaying Grendel’s mother he receives many gifts from
Hrothgar. And later once he returns to
his homeland he goes to King Hygelac passing on his gifts that he received from
Hrothgar. I find it very noble and
respectful that Beowulf spreads his riches and does not keep them all to himself. Although he did all the work himself and slain
Grendel and his mother both, in order to save another rival land, he does not
keep the gifts to himself. It shows the
amount of respect he has for his king and his land.
1. Why
exactly did Beowulf spread his riches?
2. Im
curious as to what becomes of Beowulf throughout the rest of his life.
3. Will
Beowulf continue to protect other tribes as well as his own?
I appreciate that you focus on Grendel's mother, but keep the specificity from the first post. Look at some lines that might contribute to your interpretation. The second paragraph is much more summary than is necessary.
