Act 2

Let me start off by saying, this was by far the worst thing I have ever read, everything repeated itself and these two individuals I am defiantly sure are completely lost causes. To me all that is happening is two people are bond together by a tree, and are so dependent on each other they can't go anywhere so they stay together because when they are apart Vladimir states, " I  miss you..and at the same time I was happy. Isn't that a queer thing?" (1387) Honestly, this author concocted the most indecisive characters imaginable. Both characters were incredibly irritating by their lack of ability to decide anything! And just when you think it can't get any worse, it starts all over again. After it started over yet again, the theme of confusion and repetition follows as they begin again, unsettled on what has happened last. On page 1397 they find a boot this time, but it is a different boot and Vladimir claims "perhaps you'll have socks some day" (1397) which by far is the only glimpse of hope that these two characters have a future. With the constant talk about them hanging themselves and the lost hope that this mysterious person they are suppose to meet will ever come, the fact that they found a boot, that Estrogen may grow into is the only time I have seen this play move forward, not backwards. What is the significance of the boot and the tree?

  1. The boot could mean that while they are stuck in this endless loop, there are still others that exist in the world along with them. However as the characters lack the ability to communicate to others there thoughts and feelings to others in a coherent manner, they are unable to come accross other individules who are in fact doing the same thing with them. The boot represents the inability to recognize people beyond themselves who are in the same situation further emphasizing the theme of not being able to communicate. idk what the tree means. good question though.
