Waiting for Godot Act I
I don’t
quite understand this story. Two men, Estragon and Vladimir, are in the woods
waiting by a tree for a man named Godot. The reason why they are waiting for
Godot is unclear, so I don’t understand why they are waiting for Godot.
Estragon and Vladimir are waiting for a while and then two men come into the
scene. They are Pozzo and Lucky. Lucky is Pozzo’s slave and he has a rope
around his neck. The four men hang out for a while and then Pozzo and Lucky
leave the scene. A boy then comes to Estragon and Vladimir. The boy works on
Godot’s farm and tends to the pigs? I think he tends for the pigs. But the boy
tells them that Godot won’t make it to their meeting today but he will surely
come tomorrow. So Vladimir and Estragon stay there and the scene ends. To sum
this story up, Estragon and Vladimir wait for a whole day for Godot to show up
and Godot never shows up. After reading some material about this story online, I
have a better understanding about what this story could be about; but it’s open
to interpretation. Godot has the word God in his name. I think there is some
kind of connection between Godot and God. Vladimir and Estragon are waiting on
this man Godot, but they can also be waiting on God to come visit them. What
kind of puzzles me is when the boy says that Godot doesn’t beat him but Godot
does beat his brother. It’s kind of strange.
1) Who
is Godot?
2) Why
does Godot beat the boy’s brother?
3) Is
there any significance with the interaction with Pozzo and Lucky?
