Monstars: The Hobbit

In J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, I found the portrayal of the goblins to be very interesting. I’ve noticed that no matter the story or fairytale, goblins are always portrayed as being evil. Before the goblins were even introduced to the novel though, a lot of foreshadowing took place that hinted that something bad was about to happen. Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves were sleeping in a cave in order to gain shelter from the raging thunderstorm that was taking place at the time, when Bilbo was suddenly awaken by a bad dream that he had about the cave. Suddenly a crack in the cave appeared and goblins poured out of it and snatched up everyone except Gandalf (he disappeared and killed several goblins as he did so). I find the fact that every “magical” creature has a certain image, and no one seems to really stray from it. For another example, J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the elves pretty much matches the common description expected of: jolly, magical, lithe, and beautiful. I think it would be way more interesting if an author would maybe deviate away from the stereotypical expectation of certain creatures and go in a completely different direction with that.

What trait initially makes goblins evil?
