The Hobbit- Group 3
In The Hobbit, we learn that Bilbo came from parents who had two different personalities; one who was adventurous and one who enjoyed staying home. Bilbo, like his father, likes staying home and having a routine day until Gandalf comes and asks Bilbo if he wants to go on an adventure with him. Bilbo declines but tells Galdalf that he can come over and have tea with him sometime. The next day, dwarves come in unannounced and then Galdalf shows up too. At first, Bilbo is unsure, but then he breaks out of his shell and becomes an extrovert. "Indeed he was really relieved after all to think that they had all gone without him, and without bothering to wake him up (but with never a thank you); and yet in a way he could not help feeling just a trifle disappointed. The feeling surprised him" (Tolkien 27). Galdalf knows that Bilbo like adventure, even if Bilbo himself cant see it, and as we learn, there is definitely more to Bilbo than meets the eye. His job on this great adventure is the burglar, where he is supposed to be stealth and take things without anyone noticing, but Bilbo doesnt think that he is suited to do such a job, but Galdalf knows that he can do it. My question to you is, do you think it took this adventure for Bilbo to break out his adventurous side? Why do you think Gandalf picked Bilbo in the first place?
