In this post i want to examine Lago's motivations. What was interesting to me was that he changes his reasons for hating Othello. In the very beginning, it is about being passed over for a promotion in the military, and near the end of the reading he reveals his suspicion that Othello slept with his wife.
"It is thought abroad that ’twixt my sheets / He has done my office” (369–370). He is willing to follow Othello all the way to a war in Cyprus for what? Can we believe what he has said so far, or will the real reason be revealed to us later? I understand him not liking Othello, but Lago Hates him. He wants to ruin his personal life and his professional career. This seems so extreme, and a bit suspicious. I am very excited to see how this play unfolds, and if maybe there is more to Lago's relationship with Othello than he is telling us right now. He seems wiling to take revenge on almost any character in the play, for whatever provocation, which is a strange contrast from his comical interactions with Roderigo, which can also seem fake and subversive at times. I know this play is about Othello, but Lago seems to be the glue bringing all these characters together. I bet he is going to steal the show in many ways as we learn more and more about him and what motivates him.
